The emergence of eSports platforms have witnessed a drastic uptick with an array of the potential possibility that can make online gaming the new testament for all the sports lovers.

Since the dawn of video games, gaming has always been connoted as twiddling one’s thumbs in other words a mere time pass, however, things are changing now. Who could have predicted such a swift shift in demand and interest in games to make way for esports platforms offering various tournaments and competitions, making it a multi-billion dollar, industry?

Even when digital gaming in India is still at the fledgling stage, there are companies like Nodwin, JetSynthesys, FanMojo, Tencent, Youzu, Playtonia that are trying to revolutionize, eSports platforms for users with best gaming experience. Also, their contribution to making eSports as an investor-friendly industry cannot be unseen.

According to a recent report, the eSports industry has reached $1.1 billion net worth in 2019 and is  to reach $2.17 billion by 2023

Now the question arises, why is there a sudden shift in the landscape of sports gaming in India, and why are major investors, trying to form allegiance to revolutionize, the whole online gaming experience? India offers a huge fan- base for online games like PUBG, DOTA2, and CS: GO. Many rigorously follow it with their utmost passion.

What is Esports?

E-sports, eSports or E-gaming is a form of a multi-player video game, which involves teams or leagues to compete or face off in the same game with one another.

Also, it is a subset of the larger gaming sector which also includes virtual sports, e-games, online games, fantasy sports, etc. Some highly acclaimed eSports games are Fortnite, Dota 2, CSGO, PUBG, League of Legends, Call of Duty, and Overwatch to name a few.

These multi-player games have their own colossal fanbase in, millions and are increasing day by day. Such games enlist all the features of video games with multi-player capabilities, where you play in teams and compete online.

However, there are four well-liked gameplay genres popular for eSports.

  3. First-person Shooter (FPS)
  4. Multi-player Online Battle Arena (MOBA)

Moreover, there are various games that do not fit into any of the aforementioned genres like World of Tanks and Hearthstone: Heroes of Warcraft, MechWarrior Online, and many more.

We cannot ignore that eSports has reached reach its zenith with the help of various like streaming services like Twitch and YouTube gaming which offers viewers the, ability to watch as their favorite, gamers play in real-time.

Esports in India

Major esports platforms see an immense possibility present in India, home to 300 million online players with an estimated rise of near 50% for the year 2022, accounting for the interesting, development in millennials or the youngster. Esports platforms are also targeting other segments to garner more user-base.

Many successful tournaments like PUBG Club Open India made an appearance in India. It is one of the most awaited tournaments were gamers from everywhere gather and support their favorite, teams. Also, Team Soul was amongst the one which garnered huge support which led them winning the tournament.

The average viewers count for the matches was nearly 60,000. The Prize pool for PUBG Club open India event was Rs 1.20 Crores, which is USD $175000. The winner of the tournament Team Soul is going to Global Finals in Berlin.

Dota 2

Dota 2, AKA Defense of the Ancients, is a top-down multiplayer, game, where an Ancient is a building or structure in each team’s base. In addition, Dota 2 is a, MOBA (Multiplayer Online Battle Arena) game, which is a genre derived from Real-Time Strategy games with minor RPG and action/fighting game influences. It streamlines the gameplay from controlling an entire army to controlling a single Hero.

Dota 2 is the “sequel” to the original DotA Allstars and is designed by Valve Corporation.

While developing Dota 2, the core essence of DotA Allstar has preserved i.e. the aim for both the games was the same — be the first to destroy the enemy’s “Ancient”.

In Dota, two teams of five players attempt to inveigle into the other team’s base and destroy a structure called an Ancient. In addition, each of the opposing bases follows three lanes defended by destructible towers and traversed by groups of minions spawning from each base. Each player controls a hero who has special powers; much like in a roleplaying game.

Counter-Strike

Counter-Strike (also known as CS) is a multiplayer, FPS (first-person shooter) video game (world’s number 1 online action game), just like the name suggests in this game there are two teams i.e. terrorists who terrorize and latter are counters terrorist-prevent it. Also, the game features in both single and multiplayer, modes so you can play either with bots or friends.

Designed by the Valve Corporation. It appears as a Half-Life modification in the late 90s.

Also, Counter-Strike (stand-alone) was first released in 2000. The game later gave rise to a franchise/series with a huge fan-base and they released many installments, of the CS series:

  • Counter-Strike
  • Counter-Strike: Condition Zero
  • Counter-Strike: Source.
  • Counter-Strike: Global Offensive

PUBG

It stands for “PlayerUnknown’s BattleGrounds”, PUBG is an online multiplayer, battle royale game. Battle royale games mean all are playing against each other. Over here the player starts from scratch, scrounging for weapons and collecting various tools. The rules are simple, be the only one standing by defeating all the other 99 players on an 8 x 8 km island.

The player can enjoy the game in three modes: solo, duo, and squad, with the latter letting you team up with three other players for a team of four. One of the most famous modes is the squad mode where your squad member can support and revive you.

Also, PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds Mobile game was released by Tencent Games and is available for Android and iOS devices.

Call of Duty

Call of Duty, one of the most successful franchise is a first-person shooter game, it features interesting and captivating campaign single-player modes, and a large offering of multi-player modes. Moreover, known for its ease of play over mega FPS shooter games like Battlefield, which is considered to be, difficult as it includes complex strategies.

League of legends

LOL or League of Legends is a free to play MOBA (Multi-player online battle Arena) released by Riot Games for Microsoft Windows and OS X. It resembles and was inspired by the Warcraft III: The Frozen Throne MOD, Defense of the Ancients.

Moreover, the game can be played both against AI (Computer) or other players from around the world. In addition, the Game comprises different game modes but the most common one is known as the Summoner’s Rift a 5v5 Arena.

Diverse platforms offering E-Sports

GamingMonk: 

Headquartered in New Delhi, this eSport gaming start-up host various eSports or competitive Gaming Tournaments through on its Platform (Mobile, console, and PC). Furthermore, GamingMonk organizes LAN Tournaments and online Esports competitions via their portal.
