The Indian government has not yet legalized betting, with the board recently directing state governments to create their own legislature to regulate Real-Money Gaming. Many business insiders believe that legalizing gambling would generate substantial tax revenue for the nation.

However, BCCI’s new Anti-Corruption Unit head Shabir Hussein Shekhadam Khandwawala, a police officer, believes that the government did the right thing by not legalizing betting.

The 70-year-old said that whether the government legalizes betting or not is a separate matter; but as a police officer, he believes that betting will lead to match-fixing. So far, the government has properly declined to legalize gambling.

Betting promotes match-fixing. As a result, there should be no change; however, the government could make the rules more stringent. They will look into it. Cricket’s reputation is enhanced by the fact that it is largely free of corruption. BCCI should be credited for this.

Former ACU chief Anurag Thakur suggested legalising betting

Previously, Anurag Thakur, the BCCI’s outgoing ACU head and former board chief; indicated that legalizing betting is another way to combat corruption in the game. Khandwawala, on the other hand, has a slightly different view.

According to Khandwawala, while betting is legal in some countries, people who go to stadiums to watch the game; and watch it on television trust in the game and do not go to grounds believing it may be rigged. They must defend their conviction that the game is clean of all wrongdoing.

The best players are so highly compensated that they are immune to the threat of match-fixing. They should be proud of themselves.

He went on to say that removing wrongdoing from smaller activities; and leagues is a difficult task that must be completed. They must ensure that nothing shady occurs at all stages of cricket played in the region. Aside from that, identifying and avoiding any shady conduct is critical.
